Weed Control: Having lawn weeds is a normal and expected part of having grass. Once you have lawn weeds they can spread quickly so the sooner you get on to treating them the better!
Most weeds can be easily controlled by applying a selective herbicide which will kill the weed but not harm the grass. Depending upon the degree of infestation repeat applications may be required. Weeds such as bindi are best treated before the plant sets seed and can be dug up and removed by hand.
Lawns that are dry, compacted and in a poor condition will be more susceptible to weed attacks. If you have any areas of lawn where there is damage or there is dead or dying grass, replace the turf to stop weeds from taking over the patch of ground.
The easiest way to prevent weeds from taking over your lawn is to keep your grass in a good condition. This involves ensuring your lawn is getting the required amount of water through natural rainfall and supplemented with watering in times of drought. Regular fertilising with slow release fertiliser at least once a year will assist in keeping the lawn healthy. Regular mowing will also help to remove weed seed heads before they can mature and seed your lawn.
And, of course, if you want some additional help and advice on lawn weeds and how to control them, then the simplest solution is to let Fox Mowing look after it all for you.
And while we’re there in your garden, we can do a lot of other stuff too to get your garden looking, and feeling, its best.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are your weed treatments safe for pets and kids?
Yes, we use registered products and provide clear aftercare instructions. Most areas are safe once dry, usually within a few hours.
How soon will the weeds die after treatment?
Within 7–14 days, the majority of weeds start to turn yellow and wilt. Some deep-rooted species may require follow-up treatments.
Can I mow before or after weed spraying?

Do you offer ongoing weed management?
Absolutely. We can include weed control in your regular lawn or garden care schedule to prevent regrowth and seasonal outbreaks.
Bindi
Bindi’s are literally a pain to have in your lawn. Their sharp needle like points are the bane of every bare foot in summer time!
Bindi –eyes have small fern like leaves that look similar to parsley, which when seeded turn to small flowers and dry out creating sharp pointy needles that get stuck in your feet when you walk over them. Bindi patches are easily spread as they can be moved around to different areas on the bottom of your shoes.
Treatment
Late winter and early spring is the best times to remove the weed before its seeds start to germinate and spread throughout the lawn.
You’ll need to dig out the patches of bindi by hand ensuring that all roots have been removed. Otherwise apply a broad leafed herbicide which will kill the bindi but not damage the surrounding grass.
Aerating the soil will also help to reduce bindi numbers as they favour compacted and compressed ground. Lifting the mower blades, so the grass is left longer when mowed will also make it harder for the bindi to survive as it will be suffocated by the longer grass. The sooner you get onto fixing and control bindi summers the safer you and your family will be when out and about enjoying your garden!
And, of course, if you want some additional help and advice on removing bindis or other weeds from your lawn, then the simplest solution is to let Fox Mowing look after it all for you.
And while we’re there in your garden, we can do a lot of other stuff too to get your garden looking, and feeling, its best.

What Is Bindi?

Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to treat Bindi?
Late winter to early spring — before the weed sets seed. Catching it early gives you the best chance at full eradication.
Will mowing help control Bindi?
Regular mowing can help reduce seed production but won’t remove established Bindi. It’s best combined with herbicide treatment.
Is the treatment safe for pets and kids?
Yes. We use lawn-safe herbicides and advise you to keep pets and children off the treated area until it’s dry (usually a few hours).
How can I stop Bindi from coming back?
Improving your lawn’s density through fertilising and mowing, combined with annual preventative treatments, is the best long-term solution.
Clover
Remember sitting in the grass at the school bus stop or out in the playground, searching for the ever allusive four-leafed clover?
Clover holds great childhood memories, but in reality they are purely and simply a weed!
Identification:
Dark green in colour with a ‘v’ shaped band on its three leaflets, and a white flower, clover is easily identifiable and a common weed found in many lawns.
Clovers are a perennial with creeping stems that grow close to the ground with above ground stolons and below ground rhizomes. Due to their root structure clover can easily spread throughout your lawn as it can propagate from its own clippings & offcuts, so always use a catcher when mowing lawns with clover.
Clover loves low nitrogen soils, as they obtain all the nitrogen they require from the air, so a lack of nitrogen in the soil is an ideal growing condition for them. Clover will also grow in grass and soil that is under nourished.
So if you find that clover extending and gradually taking over your lawn, and the grass that you have is turning brown or yellow, looking sickly and growing poorly it could be a sign that your grass and soil is in poor health and could have low levels of nitrogen in the soil, thus the great occurrence of clover throughout your lawn.
Treatment:
To combat clover head on – Dig out clover by hand (ensure all roots are pulled out) or apply a selective herbicide to the lawn, this will kill the clover without harming the surrounding grass. Depending on the degree of infiltration a repeat application may be required.
To help prevent clover growth – Complete a soil test to determine the nutrient levels in the lawn and depending upon the alkalinity or acidity levels apply a fertiliser to improve the condition of the grass and balance out the PH levels. Regular fertilisation will work as a natural control for dealing with and deterring clover and will also help prevent other weeds and pests from infecting and attacking the lawn.
And, of course, if you want some additional help controlling clover and other weeds in your lawn, then the simplest solution is to let Fox Mowing look after it all for you.
And while we’re there in your garden, we can do a lot of other stuff too to get your garden looking, and feeling, its best.
Take Back Your Lawn from Creeping Clover with Fox Mowing WA
While Clover may look harmless — even lucky to some — it’s actually one of the most common and frustrating weeds found in lawns across Western Australia. Left untreated, clover can take over large sections of turf, weaken your lawn, and ruin the look and feel of your outdoor space.
At Fox Mowing & Gardening WA, we specialise in Clover weed control with professional, effective treatments that target the root of the problem and keep your lawn looking its best.
What Is Clover?
Clover (Trifolium species) is a low-growing, broadleaf weed that thrives in lawns with:
It spreads rapidly via creeping stems and seeds, forming dense mats that crowd out healthy grass and make lawns uneven.
Why Clover Is a Problem
Without proper treatment, clover will continue to thrive — especially during spring and autumn in Western Australia’s temperate climate.
How We Control Clover at Fox Mowing WA
1. Weed Assessment & Identification
Our local staff not only verifies if clover is present on your lawn but also looks for contributing factors like poor soil nutrition.
2. Selective Herbicide Treatment
We use selective broadleaf herbicides designed to kill clover without harming your lawn. For smaller infestations, spot treatments are enough; for widespread growth, we may treat the entire lawn.
3. Soil & Lawn Health Improvement
Clover thrives in nitrogen-poor soils. We offer fertilising services to improve your soil’s nutrient balance and boost grass growth — helping your lawn fight back naturally.
4. Lawn Density Recovery
We may recommend overseeding, aerating, or mowing adjustments to encourage a thicker, healthier lawn that resists future weed invasions.
5. Preventative Maintenance
Ongoing seasonal treatments and proper lawn care habits will prevent clover from returning.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Clover growing in my lawn?
Clover often appears in lawns with low nitrogen or weak turf. It fixes its own nitrogen, allowing it to thrive where grass struggles.
Will your treatments harm my lawn?
No. We use selective herbicides that target clover without damaging healthy turf when applied correctly.
Can Clover be removed without chemicals?
Small patches may be hand-pulled, but larger infestations usually require treatment and a long-term lawn improvement plan.
How long until I see results?
Most clover starts to die within 1–2 weeks of treatment. We monitor progress and provide follow-up care if needed.
Dandelion
Dandelions are an easily recognisable weed due to their bright yellow daisy like flowers on tall hollow stems and toothed green leaves. When the flowers mature they turn into white puffballs that contain seeds that spread with the wind to other areas of lawn.
Dandelions are broad leaved perennials that grow from a taproot which is often 2-3 feet deep. Their root lies dormant through the cooler months, reappearing to grow new above ground shoots in the spring time
Due to the nature of the dandelions root system, they can be difficult to effectively remove by hand as the roots grow deep and if any of the taproot remains in the ground the weed will regenerate.
Treat dandelions by applying a selective herbicide to the weed and allow a couple of days to a week before you mow so as to allow the chemical to reach the roots.
Having a thick and lush lawn is the best way of preventing dandelions from establishing. Regular mowing at a higher height combined with regular fertilising will ensure a healthy and robust lawn that will be thick enough from allowing dandelions and other weeds from growing in the soil.
And, of course, if you want some additional help and advice on combatting and treating weeds in your lawn, then the simplest solution is to let Fox Mowing look after it all for you.
And while we’re there in your garden, we can do a lot of other stuff too to get your garden looking, and feeling, its best.
Tough on Dandelions, Gentle on Your Lawn – Fox Mowing WA Has You Covered
Dandelions might look cheerful with their yellow blooms, but for lawn lovers across Western Australia, they’re a nuisance. Once established, Dandelions spread rapidly, grow deep roots, and can quickly spoil the look of a well-maintained lawn or garden.
At Fox Mowing & Gardening WA, we offer safe, reliable, and effective Dandelion control services to remove these stubborn weeds — right down to the root — and help keep your lawn healthy, smooth, and weed-free all year round.
What Is Dandelion?
Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is a broadleaf perennial weed known for:
They’re incredibly resilient and can reappear quickly even after mowing or pulling — unless dealt with properly.
Why Dandelions Are a Problem
Once they settle in, dandelions are very persistent, especially in underfed or thinning lawns.
Our Dandelion Control Process
At Fox Mowing WA, we don’t just treat the surface — we go after the root of the problem:
1. Accurate Weed Assessment
We start by inspecting your lawn to confirm dandelion presence and check for other underlying issues such as poor soil health or compaction.
2. Selective Broadleaf Weed Control
We apply selective herbicides that target dandelions specifically without harming your surrounding grass. These treatments work by moving through the plant into the root system to ensure complete removal.
3. Manual Removal (Optional)
For isolated or sensitive areas, we offer manual digging services to remove dandelions by the root — helpful for organic gardens or near edible plants.
4. Lawn Health Strategy
We’ll recommend fertilising, aeration, and mowing strategies to restore lawn density — thick turf makes it harder for dandelions to re-establish.
5. Ongoing Prevention
We provide advice or seasonal maintenance programs to keep dandelions and other weeds at bay long term.
Why Choose Fox Mowing & Gardening WA?
We treat your lawn like it’s our own — and we don’t leave until the job’s done properly.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can mowing control dandelions?
No — mowing only removes the flower heads. The root remains and will quickly regrow, often stronger than before.
Are your treatments safe for pets and kids?
Yes. We use approved, lawn-safe products and advise you to keep pets and children off the lawn until it’s dry — usually within a few hours.
How long will it take for the weeds to die?
Most dandelions begin wilting within 7–10 days. Full results may take a few weeks depending on conditions and root depth.
How can I stop them from coming back?
We recommend improving lawn health with regular mowing, fertilising, aeration, and applying pre-emergent weed control each season.
Garden Weeds
No garden is without the odd garden weed. Weeds are a constant but expected burden in every garden.
Weeds thrive in sunlight and bad soil. So regular fertilising to improve soil condition and applying layers of mulch will help to suffocate and suppress garden weeds.
To combat weeds – pull any visible weeds out by hand. This is best accomplished when the ground is wet and pliable, so get out in the garden after you have watered or after recent rainfall. You will need to completely remove all weed roots and tubers from the ground, by gently pulling, prying or digging them out as any un-left roots will continue to spread and grow new weed shoots throughout your garden.
Remember to dig only when you need to as some weeds will germinate simply by touch so disturbing the soil too much will increase the spreading of any left over weed seeds in the ground. To help prevent this salve the disturbed spot with plants or cover with mulch to prevent the weeds from coming above ground in search of sunlight.
Groundcovers, trees and shrubs also play their role in the fight against garden weeds as they shade the ground creating unfavourable conditions as weeds will not be able to grow beneath them without access to direct sunlight.
And, of course, if you want some additional help and advice on combatting and treating weeds in your garden weeds, then the simplest solution is to let Fox Mowing look after it all for you.
And while we’re there in your garden, we can do a lot of other stuff too to get your garden looking, and feeling, its best.

Blackberry
Blackberry’s although incredibly delicious to eat are considered a noxious weed and are regarded as one of the worst weeds in Australia. In 1999 the blackberry was declared a weed of National Significance due to its invasiveness and potential to spread.
There are at least 16 species of blackberry in Australia. Blackberries are semi deciduous, with tangled, prickly stems that form thickets up to several metres in height with edible red-black berries. They have wide root base which can be up to 20cm wide and can grow to a depth of 4 meters. Their secondary roots grow horizontally from the crown 30-60cm and then grow down and shoot thin roots in all directions.
Blackberries have the ability to spread quickly as their stems (also known as canes) root where they touch the ground, producing a daughter plant. Due to this factor, care will need to be taken to keep surrounding areas clear of the blackberry thickets and stems and to remove any isolated plants from the ground before they can establish and seed.
To control blackberry bushes you will need to spray them with herbicide during the flowering/fruiting season and slash the thickets regularly to prevent spreading. Unfortunately if you want to completely eradicate the blackberry bush you will need to dig out the entire root system so as to be free of the weed.
And, of course, if you want some additional help controlling noxious weeds, then the simplest solution is to let Fox Mowing look after it all for you.
And while we’re there in your garden, we can do a lot of other stuff too to get your garden looking, and feeling, its best.
Stop Invasive Blackberry from Taking Over — Call the Fox Mowing WA Team
While the fruit may look sweet, Blackberry is one of Western Australia’s worst declared weeds — highly invasive, extremely fast-growing, and difficult to remove once established. It doesn’t just affect gardens — it invades bushland, paddocks, fences, and waterways, often smothering native vegetation and reducing land value.
At Fox Mowing & Gardening WA, we provide targeted, professional Blackberry control services to safely and effectively remove this thorny invader from your property — and help keep it from coming back.
Why Blackberry Is a Problem
Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus aggregate) is a woody, thorny shrub that forms dense thickets and spreads through:
It’s classed as a Weed of National Significance and is illegal to grow or spread in WA.
Left untreated, Blackberry:
Our Blackberry Control Approach
At Fox Mowing & Gardening WA, we combine industry knowledge with professional-grade tools to deliver safe, effective Blackberry control:
1. Assessment & Mapping
We inspect the site, identify all infestations (including hidden growth), and assess access, safety risks, and regrowth potential.
2. Mechanical Cutting or Slashing
For large infestations, we may begin with mechanical removal of top growth to expose stems and roots for follow-up treatment.
3. Targeted Herbicide Application
We use a systemic herbicide that is selective in order to destroy the entire plant, not just the leaves. This method travels down to the roots to prevent regrowth.
4. Organic/Non-Chemical Options
For sensitive areas (e.g. near waterways or edible crops), we can recommend safe, non-chemical control methods like manual removal or hot water treatments, though repeated applications are usually required.
5. Ongoing Monitoring & Prevention
Blackberry regrows quickly. We offer scheduled follow-up treatments, mulching, and replanting with suitable ground covers to prevent re-establishment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it illegal to have Blackberry growing on my property?
Yes — Blackberry is a declared weed in Western Australia. Landowners are legally required to manage it and prevent its spread.
Can I just cut Blackberry back myself?
You can cut it, but it will almost certainly regrow unless treated properly. The roots are extensive and resilient.
Is the herbicide treatment safe for other plants or pets?
To prevent non-target plants, we carefully apply selective herbicides. We’ll always provide advice on when it’s safe for pets to return to treated areas (usually once dry).
How often do I need to treat Blackberry?
Most infestations need 2–3 treatments over a year to fully suppress regrowth. We’ll customise a plan according to your site’s objectives.
Onion Grass
Onion weed is deemed a noxious weed throughout most parts of Australia including NSW, VIC, SA, WA and Tasmania.
The Onion weed is a perennial grass distinguishable due to its long thin green leaves which when squashed will smell like onion. The flowers are mainly white and grow in florets from long stalks which form seeds in summer and autumn and are spread by the wind blowing them into new areas. The onion weed has an underground bulb that develops numerous small bulblets which in turn sprout new plants.
Onion weed can be difficult to remove. Never try and remove or dig out onion weed by hand. Due to their root system, as soon as they are touched or disturbed they will release tiny bulbs into the soil, spreading and multiplying your problem tenfold!
Slash or mow the foliage down to ground level and repeatedly apply a herbicide to the weed until it dies away. Another method is to cover the onion weed with a tarp or barrier that will deprive the weed from water and sun causing the bulb to weaken and die.
In extreme infestations you may be required to completely returf the area once the onion weed has been eliminated.
And, of course, if you want some additional help controlling noxious weeds, then the simplest solution is to let Fox Mowing look after it all for you.
And while we’re there in your garden, we can do a lot of other stuff too to get your garden looking, and feeling, its best.
Eliminate Stubborn Onion Weed with Fox Mowing WA’s Expert Solutions
Onion Grass might seem like just another thin blade in your lawn — until it spreads uncontrollably, resists mowing, and refuses to die off. Also known as Onion Weed, this invasive plant is one of the trickiest weeds to control in Western Australia’s gardens and lawns.
At Fox Mowing & Gardening WA, we offer safe, effective, and professional Onion Grass removal services, using targeted methods that get to the root of the problem — literally.
What Is Onion Grass?
Onion Grass (Romulea rosea and Allium triquetrum) is a perennial weed that features:
It thrives in compacted soils and poor turf conditions, especially during autumn and winter, and spreads both through seed and underground bulb clusters.
Why Onion Grass Is a Problem
Without the right strategy, Onion Grass can take over lawns, garden beds, and even pavers or paths.
Our Onion Grass Control Approach
At Fox Mowing & Gardening WA, we take a multi-step approach for long-lasting results:
1. Proper Identification
We inspect your property to confirm Onion Grass and rule out similar narrow-bladed weeds like nutgrass or guildford grass.
2. Targeted Herbicide Treatment
We use specialised selective herbicides that translocate to the bulb — killing the weed from the inside out. Timing is crucial, so we apply during the plant’s active growing phase for best results.
3. Repeat Applications (if needed)
Due to the weed’s persistence and underground bulbs, multiple treatments may be required over a growing season to fully eradicate it.
4. Lawn Recovery Support
We’ll recommend aeration, fertilising, and mowing strategies to strengthen your lawn and outcompete future weed outbreaks.
5. Preventative Monitoring
We offer follow-up maintenance and seasonal check-ups to stop Onion Grass from re-establishing.
Why Choose Fox Mowing & Gardening WA?
We take pride in helping Western Australians enjoy lush, weed-free lawns — without the frustration of ineffective DIY fixes.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove Onion Grass by hand?
You can try, but it’s very difficult to remove the full bulb system manually. Any piece left behind can regrow — making it a job best left to professionals.
How many treatments are needed?
Typically 1–3 treatments spaced over a few weeks or months. This depends on the infestation size and the time of year.
Is it safe for pets and kids?
Yes — we use registered herbicides and provide clear instructions. Treated areas are safe once dry, usually within a few hours.
Will Onion Grass come back next year?
Without treatment, it likely will. But with a tailored plan and improved lawn health, we can dramatically reduce its chances of returning.
Nut Grass
Nut Grass is a very invasive weed that grows rapidly throughout Autumn and warmer months. Being apart of the Sedge family it is identifiable by its shiny, green triangular shaped leaves that sprawl out from the centre on tough thin stems. It has brown feathery flowers on long stems topped with three leaves.
The root system of the nut grass is compromised of rhizomes and tubers which send out underground runners that contain bulbs that grow and then form plants in new areas.
The best method to control Nut Grass is to dig the weed out by hand ensuring that all root systems and bulbs are thoroughly removed or to apply a selective herbicide to the weed in an attempt to kill it. Repeat applications every couple of weeks may be required as the weed is persistent and is hard to eradicate.
And, of course, if you want some additional help controlling problem weeds, then the simplest solution is to let Fox Mowing look after it all for you.
And while we’re there in your garden, we can do a lot of other stuff too to get your garden looking, and feeling, its best.
Say Goodbye to Nutgrass — One of WA’s Most Persistent Lawn Weeds
Nutgrass (also called Nutsedge) might look like just another blade of grass, but make no mistake — this weed is a tough, invasive pest that can take over your lawn or garden in no time. It’s one of the most difficult-to-remove weeds in Western Australia and often survives basic treatments, mowing, and hand-pulling.
At Fox Mowing & Gardening WA, we offer professional, effective Nutgrass control services that target the weed’s underground tubers and prevent future outbreaks.
What Is Nutgrass?
Nutgrass (Cyperus rotundus) is a perennial, grass-like sedge weed with:
Nutgrass is highly invasive and flourishes in:
It’s nearly impossible to control using standard weed sprays or mowing alone.
Why Nutgrass Is So Difficult to Remove
Nutgrass needs to be treated professionally and strategically — and that’s where Fox Mowing WA can help.
Our Nutgrass Control Process
1. Inspection & Confirmation
We identify Nutgrass and assess the extent of the infestation — ensuring it’s not confused with look-alike weeds like onion grass or guildford grass.
2. Specialist Herbicide Application
We apply selective sedge-specific herbicides that travel deep into the plant and kill it at the root and tuber level. These are not available in most over-the-counter products.
3. Follow-up Treatments
Due to Nutgrass’s resilience, we usually recommend 2–3 applications over several weeks for full eradication.
4. Lawn Health Recovery
We support your lawn’s recovery through aeration, fertilising, and proper mowing techniques — helping dense turf grow back and suppress future weed growth.
5. Drainage & Soil Advice
Since Nutgrass thrives in moist soils, we’ll provide advice on improving drainage or adjusting irrigation habits to discourage regrowth.
Why Choose Fox Mowing & Gardening WA?
We don’t just spray and go — we solve the problem at the root.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will regular weed killer work on Nutgrass?

Can I pull it out by hand?
Unfortunately, no. Pulling Nutgrass usually breaks the stem but leaves the underground tubers, which quickly regenerate.
Is the treatment safe for pets and children?
Yes. We use registered, lawn-safe products and provide clear instructions — most treated areas are safe once dry.
How soon will I see results?
Initial wilting can occur within 7–14 days, but multiple treatments are often required for full control depending on severity.
